Beacon

A wearable personal safety device developed using existing industry proven mechanisms and techniques that inflates to become a visual signal for people who need assistance in marine environments. Beacon is designed to work alongside existing PFD safety equipment and can be set to inflate automatically if a user falls overboard or to be manually activated to create a tall visual landmark to assist in location and rescue.

Born from my own personal experiences instructing and coaching in the sport of sailing, Beacon was developed as a ‘market ready’ safety product to address a real world problem as part of my Final Year Thesis for my BID.

Fall & Winter Term

This concept was created over a period of 8 months, including research, testing, refinement, and presentation phases. I had gone as far tested my concept in as many real world environments and situations as possible to properly refine and shape the direction of the design. A physically difficult task to achieve during October - April in Canada.
